CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the fundamental technology used to style web pages. Along with HTML and JavaScript, CSS forms the core trio of web development, but unlike HTML and JavaScript, its role is primarily visual. HTML is used for structuring the content of a webpage, while JavaScript handles its functionality. CSS, on the other hand, defines how that content is presented — the layout, colors, fonts, spacing, and even complex animations. It’s the layer that turns the raw, unstyled HTML content into a beautifully designed page that users interact with.At its most basic, CSS is a set of rules that describe how elements on a webpage should appear. These rules are applied to HTML elements and consist of a selector and a declaration. The selector targets a specific HTML element, while the declaration consists of properties and values that define how the element should be styled. For example, if you want to change the color of all the headings in a webpage, you can use the h1 selector and specify the color property in the declaration. But CSS is much more than just changing colors. It allows you to control the layout of a page, making use of advanced features like Flexbox and Grid. Flexbox is perfect for building flexible, one-dimensional layouts, while CSS Grid excels at creating complex two-dimensional layouts. With these tools, developers can craft responsive designs that adapt to different screen sizes, ensuring that the website looks great on both large desktop monitors and mobile devices.
